Suicides in Northern India: Comparison of trends and review of literature

Among substance use disorders, alcohol abuse has been linked with increased suicide rates.39–41 We examined the trends of completed suicides in Northern India over a period of ten years.

2006, LancetCitation Excerpt :Low-and-middle-income countries in the European Region have the highest per-head consumption of alcohol in the world, with the largest share of unrecorded consumption and arguably the most hazardous drinking patterns.25,26 Much of the excess adult mortality in the Commonwealth of Independent States and other eastern countries in the Region has been attributed to alcohol ingestion.21,27–32 In these countries, binge drinking has led to premature adult mortality from injuries, ranging from poisoning due to alcohol intoxication, to road traffic injuries, violence, and cardiovascular mortality.21,33
