Abstract

The food consumption and nutrient intake of 1157 eastern Finnish men aged 54 years was investigated in the “Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study” (“KIHD”) in 1984–86. The consumption of vegetables and potatoes was low and the consumption of fats and coffee abundant. The average intake of energy and most nutrients met or exceeded the recommended dietary alloances (RDA) of the National Research Council of the USA with the exception of vitamin E, copper, selenium, fluoride and chromium. The four-day food recording by household measures proved a feasible and acceptable method of food data collection. It also appeared to give estimates of food consumption and nutrient intake that are comparable to earlier population surveys of food intake.

A subject was defined as a smoker if he had ever smoked (cigarettes, cigars, or a pipe) on a regular basis (Salonen et al., 1992). Alcohol consumption was assessed by using a structured quantity–frequency method involving a drinking behavior questionnaire covering the previous 12 months and was measured in grams per week (Ihanainen et al., 1989). The energy expenditure resulting from conditioning leisure time physical activities was assessed by using a 12-month history modified from the Minnesota Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire.

Type A behavior, which shares a strong achievement orientation with John Henryism (Everson et al., 1997a) was measured by the Jenkins Activity Survey (Lakka et al., 1994). Hopelessness, which in prior work (Ihanainen et al., 1989) predicted carotid atherosclerosis progression in the KIHD cohort, was measured by the 2 item Hopelessness Scale. Work-place demands, a predictor of AMI and cardiovascular as well as all-cause mortality in previous work (Everson et al., 1997b) on the KIHD cohort, was measured by 11 items denoting physical (i.e. heavy physical work, repetitive straining of muscles, exposure to noise) as well as mental demands of the job.
