Regional assessment of elderly disability in the U.S.
2000, Social Science and MedicineCitation Excerpt :Furthermore, this purported pattern may be complicated by migration patterns (Greenberg and Schneider 1992), as Blacks and Whites followed quite different paths during the so-called greater migration period — 1920 to 1970 (Grossman, 1989). However, physical and man-made environments may have an effect on disability risk, independent of individuals' socioeconomic characteristics (Balarajan and McDowall, 1988; Pope and Tarlow, 1991). It is believed that geographic patterning of risk factors are inculcated in historical, cultural, physical and socioeconomic environments.
