2021, Aggression and Violent BehaviorCitation Excerpt :In fact, the gender equality of suicidal ideation and attitudes towards suicide, along with the overrepresentation of females in nonfatal suicidal behavior and higher rate of completion in men has been labeled the ‘gender paradox of suicide’ (Canetto, 1993; Canetto & Sakinofsky, 1998; Parker et al., 1997; Schrijvers et al., 2012). In understanding this paradox in late-life, researchers have posted that older men who retire are at greater risk for a loss of identity, interpersonal contact, and friendship when they leave the workplace due to unemployment or retirement (Canetto, 2016; Murphy, 1998; Schrijvers et al., 2012). However, this does not fully explain the finding as older men have lower exposure to most suicide risks (e.g., widowhood, living alone, depression, functional and financial difficulties) but take lethal suicidal actions (i.e., self-inflicted death by firearm) more often (Canetto, 2016).
