2012, Archives of Gerontology and GeriatricsCitation Excerpt :During study development, response rate to a postal survey can probably be increased using simple procedures, such as sending a paid envelope for responses, and sending regularly reminders to non-respondents. For example, before sending the first reminder, Hébert et al. (1996b) had obtained a response rate of 40.4% in a postal survey among the elderly; this response rate reached 70.7% after sending the first reminder (sent 7 days after the original mailing), and 87.4% after sending a personalized reminder letter (sent 3 weeks after the original mailing). Another way to reduce the effects of non-response bias is to use statistical procedures that deal with missing data.
