(1999) found that the percentage of β-galactosidase positive thermo-tolerant coliforms other than E. coli of likely fecal origin isolated on modified CHROMagar ECC incubated at 41 °C was higher in marine than in river water. A wide range of E. coli/thermo-tolerant coliforms ratio values (0.28–0.84) reported in some previous studies (Fattal et al., 1987; Rasmussen and Ziegler, 2003; Garcia-Armisen et al., 2007; Hachich et al., 2012) points to the fact that there is no universal ratio between these two indicators but it depends on various factors such as methodology, matrix, environmental conditions, etc. Although CCA and Colilert®-18 media are based on the same enzymatic principles, there were 30 isolates (2.5%) in which discordant β-D-glucuronidase activity was observed when comparing appearance on those two media.
