Methodological research in the swedish surveys of living conditions

Problems of measurement and data collection

Abstract

In Sweden, surveys of living conditions have passed through the initial stages. We have been able to provide rough and broad descriptions of the health situation in different respects, housing standards within different population subgroups, distributions of income etc. Often the surveys, in Sweden as well as in other countries, have kept an acceptable standard with regard to sampling and non-response. However, regardless of whether the aim of the surveys is to supply relatively superficial statistics for official use or statistics for analytic research, a better control of measurement quality is needed. In this paper we present a summary of about ten years of methodological work conducted by Statistics Sweden on the Surveys of Living Conditions.
