Criteria of sociocultural adjustment: The case of the Russian Community in Israel since 1989
2011, International Journal of Intercultural RelationsCitation Excerpt :Consequently, evaluation of the sociocultural adjustment process should include both populations. Studies conducted in several countries about the mutual expectations of migrants and long-term residents regarding various aspects of integration in the new society have indicated a lack of correspondence between the two groups (Horenczyk, 1996; Horenczyk & Tatar, 1998; Jasinskaja-Lahti, Liebkind, Horenczyk & Schmitz, 2003; Montreuil & Bourhis, 2004; Naves, Rojas, Garsia & Pumares, 2007; Zagefka & Brown, 2002). Horenczyk's (1996) research among adult immigrants revealed that while both Russian migrants and Israeli hosts preferred integration, members of the receiving community had a stronger preference for assimilation than did migrants; they also believed that migrants were more willing to assimilate than was actually the case.

2011, International Journal of Intercultural RelationsCitation Excerpt :The integration essentially means maintaining harmony, connectedness, and a sense of community (Bourhis, Barrette, El-Geledi, & Schmidt, 2009; Lee, 2003). Its promotion is valuable for the migrant in various aspects of life, as well as for the benefit of the host society (Freeman, 2000; Horenczyk & Tatar, 1998). Conceivably, the promotion tends to hinge on two conditions, pertaining to the migrant's own contribution and reception of support from the environment.
