In this issue, serious issues to do with the value system of public health are tackled in articulate contributions by Steven Coughlin and Robin Stott. In an Editorial, Coughlin argues that attention needs to be paid to hope and hopefulness as public health constructs, and to ways in which engendering hope as a means to health and wellbeing can be incorporated into public health work. Meanwhile, Robin Stott, a long time campaigner on international and peace issues, raises the question about what atheroma and global warming have in common, and concludes that the high carbon lifestyle of industrial societies is to blame.
