Height is directly related to social class in children and adults and within each sex.1,2 The Small Shoe Company—the adjective referring to the shoes, not the company—reflects the small stature of local residents in the socioeconomically deprived east end of the city of Glasgow, UK. Progress to regenerate deprived urban areas has been slow. In the distance, on the south side of the River Clyde, are the failed experiments in urban planning that comprised slum clearances followed by high rise tower blocks. But behind the Small Shoe Company, the site of a former women’s refuge has not yet been given a new purpose.
