Validation of the registered underlying causes of stillbirth

    Abstract

    Clinical case notes were used to validate the registered causes of 200 stillbirths. The diagnoses were concordant in 69% of cases using a 14-category classification of fetal death, discrepancies being mainly due to available information not being used in the assignment of cause of stillbirth. Excluding cases of congenital malformation, 34% of stillbirths occurred in labour.
