This book represents an extensive and updated (as far as possible for a book) review of the state of epidemiology as applied to the study of cardiovascular diseases. An exhaustive analysis of this issue is performed and critically proposed in a stimulating manner. The book is organised in a very rational and clear structure, with a short but well focused section devoted to descriptive epidemiology worldwide (only a minority of data being reported for the United States). A more extensive section is devoted to analytical epidemiology discussing evidence supporting the role of risk factors including smoke, blood pressure, diet, lifestyle, blood lipids, gender, psychological factors, infection, air pollution, environmental temperature, metabolic syndrome and diabetes, overweight and obesity, thrombosis, physical activity, homocysteine, genetic factors, hormones, etc. Interestingly, attention has also been paid to the interplay among risk factors and the overall evaluation of their effects.
