In this issue, we address some of the dynamic aspects of the underlying determinants of health and inequalities.
In an Editorial, we raise the issue of adults at 12 years of age and the discrepancy between biological and social puberty. There does seem to be something going on here, and the conclusion is that in responding to earlier puberty to optimise public health we must move away from regarding young people as firmly ensconced in childhood long after their physical journey into adulthood has begun. In a related Speakers Corner, Choi draws attention to some of the stark consequences of technological innovation for behaviour and the way in which we live our lives. The challenge in working with the grain of science is to have policies that enable equitable benefits to flow, whilst simultaneously addressing the adverse consequences.
